The magnetic stand included in many dial indicator sets comes in very handy for positioning the gauge's plunger in just the right spot on the workpiece. Here's a little demonstration by Charles:
I have one of those in my woodwork shop. Don’t need to be as accurate as the metalworking guys but it’s really nice to get things true and centered. Interesting site. Good luck.
